Journey details

Licancabur is one of the most recognizable volcanoes in the San Pedro de Atacama landscape. This shared two-and-a-half-day expedition approaches the volcano from Bolivia and combines international border logistics, high-altitude acclimatization, refuge accommodation and a demanding summit attempt. On the first day, we pick you up from your accommodation and travel to the Hito Cajón border crossing. After completing the Chilean and Bolivian border procedures, we continue to the mountain refuge, where breakfast is served and the group leaves its main luggage. The acclimatization program includes an approximately three-hour walk beside the Verde and Blanca lagoons at around 4,300 meters above sea level. The area is frequently cold and windy, so appropriate mountain clothing is essential. We then return to the refuge for lunch, rest, dinner, hydration and a briefing for the following day. Before dawn on the second day, the group has breakfast and travels by 4x4 vehicle to the base of Licancabur. The ascent begins during the coldest part of the night and continues over exposed volcanic terrain. The mountain guide continuously evaluates the weather, wind, terrain, schedule, physical condition and altitude response of each participant. Reaching the summit at 5,920 meters is an objective, but it is never guaranteed. The guide may slow the pace, establish a turnaround time, change the route or end the ascent whenever necessary for safety. After the ascent attempt, the group descends to the vehicle. Participants normally return to the refuge for food, recovery and rest, returning to San Pedro de Atacama the following morning. A return on the second day after the ascent may be possible when all participants have sufficient physical condition and when the guide determines that the schedule, border, road and safety conditions allow it. Entrance fees in Bolivia are not included. Each passenger must bring at least 150 BOB for entrance fees and at least 100 BOB additional for personal expenses. Molantur works with UIMLA-certified mountain guides and holds a SERNATUR registration for high-mountain tourism activities.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is reaching the summit of Licancabur guaranteed?

Expand

No. The summit is an objective, but it is never guaranteed. Weather, wind, terrain, timing, physical condition and each participant’s response to the altitude determine how far the group can safely progress. The mountain guide’s safety decision is final.

Who is responsible for the travel and immigration documents?

Expand

Each passenger is solely responsible for carrying valid original documents and meeting the entry, exit and immigration requirements applicable to their nationality and residence status. Requirements vary between travelers. Molantur may provide general guidance, but it cannot guarantee authorization to cross the border. Passengers without the required documents may be unable to participate, without entitlement to a refund.

Can we return to San Pedro on the second day?

Expand

It may be possible to return after the ascent on the second day if all participants have sufficient physical condition and the guide confirms that the schedule, road, border and safety conditions allow it. Otherwise, the group returns to the refuge to rest and travels back to San Pedro the following morning.

Are the Bolivian entrance fees included?

Expand

No. Entrance fees in Bolivia are not included in any service version. Each passenger must bring at least 150 BOB for entrance fees. We also recommend carrying at least 100 BOB additional for personal expenses, for a recommended minimum total of 250 BOB per person.
