Itinerary

Day 1 – Southern Lagoons and Villa Mar: After pick-up in San Pedro de Atacama, travel by shared transport to Hito Cajón. Have breakfast around the border crossing and continue in a shared 4x4 through Laguna Blanca, Laguna Verde, the Dalí Desert and Polques hot springs, where bathing is optional. After lunch, visit Sol de Mañana and Laguna Colorada before arriving in Villa Mar. Dinner and overnight stay in a private en-suite room at Saelito, a basic hostel.
Day 2 – Rock Formations and Salt Hostel: After breakfast, explore the Copa del Mundo and Camello formations, Italia Perdida, Valle de Rocas and Anaconda Canyon. Stop for lunch in Alota. During the afternoon, continue through the Sora wetlands and canyon, with a visit to Julaca. Dinner and overnight stay in a private en-suite room at Desierto de Sal, a basic salt hostel.
Day 3 – Salar de Uyuni and Return to Villa Mar: Leave before dawn for Salar de Uyuni, where sunrise may be seen if conditions allow. After breakfast, visit Plaza de las Banderas, the Dakar Monument, the salt springs, Colchani and the Train Cemetery. Stop for lunch in Uyuni, then begin the return journey via San Cristóbal. Dinner and overnight stay in a private en-suite room at the basic Saelito hostel in Villa Mar.
Day 4 – Return to San Pedro de Atacama: Leave Villa Mar early and stop for the included breakfast on the way to Hito Cajón. After border procedures, return by shared transport to San Pedro de Atacama. Lunch and dinner are not included on this final day. Border delays may affect arrival time.

Recommendations for your trip

Check the documents required to enter Bolivia and return to Chile according to your nationality and immigration status. Bring 400 Bolivianos in cash per person for entrance fees and personal expenses; entrances are not included. Pack warm layered clothing, comfortable shoes, sun protection and a swimsuit if you wish to bathe at Polques. The route reaches approximately 4,900 m, so allow time to adjust to the altitude when possible and tell your driver-guide if you feel unwell. Luggage is limited to one bag comparable to a 10 kg carry-on. Expect simple hostel facilities: electricity may be switched off at certain hours, and hot water may be unavailable. Leave ample time between the scheduled return and any onward flight.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the hostels and bathrooms like?

Expand

All three nights include a private room and private bathroom. These are very basic hostels, closer in comfort to mountain refuges than conventional hotels. Electricity may be switched off at certain hours, and the simple hot-water system can sometimes fail.

Are entrance fees included?

Expand

No. Entrance fees are paid during the expedition in Bolivia. We recommend carrying 400 Bolivianos in cash per person for entrance fees and personal expenses.

Is Isla Incahuasi always accessible?

Expand

No. Access depends on the season and conditions on the salt flat. During the rainy season, water may prevent entry. The route may also change according to weather and availability; when necessary, other points of interest are visited instead.

Are all meals included?

Expand

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included during the first three days, including breakfast on the departure day. On day four, only breakfast is included; the expedition ends after the border crossing and return to San Pedro de Atacama.

How much luggage can I bring?

Expand

One bag comparable to a 10 kg carry-on per person. Space in the shared 4x4 is limited.

Can I take a flight on the return day?

Expand

Return to San Pedro de Atacama is estimated between 13:00 and 14:00 on day four, but border procedures or other conditions beyond our control can cause delays. Avoid flights with a tight connection to that arrival time.
