Journey details

We will pick you up at your accommodation before dawn and travel into the Andean highlands in a private vehicle, reaching the Tatio geothermal field at approximately 4,200 meters above sea level. We will explore the geothermal area while observing steam columns, boiling pools and other manifestations of the volcanic activity beneath the surface. The private format allows us to move calmly through the permitted sectors and dedicate more time to observation and photography. Unlike the shared and semi-private versions, this private route continues to White Geyser, a more secluded geothermal area where we will also enjoy breakfast surrounded by the high-altitude landscape. On our return journey, we will stop at Putana Wetland and the Machuca sector, with opportunities to appreciate the Andean scenery and look for local wildlife before returning to San Pedro de Atacama. Geothermal activity, steam visibility, weather and wildlife sightings vary according to natural conditions and cannot be guaranteed.

Itinerary

Journey into the Andean highlands: We will leave San Pedro de Atacama before dawn in a private vehicle and begin the ascent toward the high Andes. As altitude increases, the desert gives way to the volcanic landscapes of the Altiplano.
Tatio Geysers: At approximately 4,200 meters above sea level, we will explore one of the world's highest geothermal fields. We will walk through the permitted areas while observing steam vents, boiling pools and the geological processes that shape this volcanic environment.
White Geyser: Our private route continues to White Geyser, a quieter geothermal sector outside the standard shared itinerary. Here, we will have more time to explore the surroundings and appreciate another expression of the area's geothermal activity.
Breakfast in the highlands: We will take a peaceful break for breakfast surrounded by the high-altitude landscape. Vegetarian and vegan alternatives can be arranged when requested in advance.
Putana Wetland: On the return journey, we will stop at Putana Wetland, a high-Andean ecosystem surrounded by volcanoes and open landscapes. Depending on natural conditions, it is possible to observe different bird species and other Andean wildlife.
Machuca and return: Before returning to San Pedro de Atacama, we will visit the Machuca sector, known for its traditional Andean architecture and surrounding wetlands. After this final stop, we will descend toward San Pedro.

Explore San Pedro de Atacama, one of the world’s most unique desert destinations, with tours designed for every travel style: shared, semi-private and private experiences.

San Pedro de Atacama is the gateway to some of the most extraordinary landscapes on Earth, including salt flats, volcanoes, geysers, high-altitude lagoons and some of the clearest night skies in the world. Located in northern Chile, this destination combines geology, culture and extreme environments in a compact and accessible area. At Molantur, we offer three types of tour experiences adapted to different travel styles: Shared tours: ideal for travelers looking for a complete experience at an accessible price, with groups of up to 15 passengers and fixed schedules. Semi-private tours: small groups of up to 8 people, designed to provide a more comfortable, flexible and personalized experience while maintaining a balanced cost. Private tours: exclusive service in a private vehicle with a dedicated guide, allowing flexible schedules, custom stops and a fully tailored experience. Due to the high altitude of many destinations (over 4,000 meters), we recommend proper acclimatization and hydration. Each tour includes transportation and a professional guide, while entrance fees to parks are usually paid on site. San Pedro is not only a destination, but a base to explore the Atacama Desert through different levels of comfort, adventure and connection with nature.
